How to keep your employees happy during an office move

While we all know that moving house can be a stressful experience, just imagine having the pressure of moving your entire office! Statistics from the International Facility Management Association reveal that, “on average, two-thirds of employees who are given the task of managing an office relocation are fired or quit within six months of the move.” Here are some tips to ensure employees stay happy and productive during the move: office-move  

1. Involve employees in the planning process

It is always a good idea to ask your employees for their input when it comes to ideas about the new office layout, as they probably know their working environment better than you do. Schedule a meeting well in advance of the moving date and pose questions such as: 'how do you envisage your ideal working space? and 'what do you like/dislike about the current layout?' This will make them feel empowered and appreciated.  

2.Make sure your staff know what is going on

Staff don’t appreciate it when they feel they don’t have a clue what is happening in the business. This is why regular communication is crucial. Keep your employees up to date with the progress of the office move. They have a right to know what's going on and it will help motivate them about their new environment.  

3. Upgrade your coffee machine

Moving office is a great excuse to declutter and tidy up. Get rid of and upgrade any old IT or kitchen equipment. It is also the perfect time to create a good kitchen environment. This could be done with the purchase of a new coffee machine or water cooler station. When needing a break, employees can perk themselves up at the new office drinks stations and this will lift team morale.  

4. Reward employees by letting them have fun

An office move is the perfect opportunity to purchase some new pieces of office ‘furniture’. A ping pong table or a video games console provide opportunities for play and fun that could help the team build friendships and socialise. Having the ability to spend a few minutes away from their desk can help to improve employee motivation and productivity.
