Health in the Workplace: Pedometer Challenge

At Eden Kafevend we strive to continually improve the well-being of our employees by ensuring a healthier, safer and supportive working environment. Towards the end of last year, whilst reviewing our future HR objectives, we were keen to focus on employee health and wellbeing. We understand that healthy employees are happy employees and we wanted to spread this message to everyone in the business.

What we do at Eden Kafevend for our Staff

bFccnUDt_400x400We want our colleagues to benefit, get involved and ultimately help us achieve our goal. Eden Kafevend already have some great initiatives in place including discounted gym membership, fresh fruit delivered to all offices, staff water coolers for home, occupational health services and a healthcare cash plan. However, we wanted to adopt a more interactive approach – involving our employees – with the ultimate aim of getting our organisation in better shape!

After conducting some research into health and wellbeing, we came across an NHS initiative called
Healthy Working Lives. The Healthy Working Lives (HWL) award process is an integrated approach to improving health, safety and wellbeing at work. This accredited award programme supports employers and employees to develop health promotion and safety themes in the workplace in a practical, logical way, which is beneficial to all. There are 3 levels of award – gold, silver and bronze. We signed up to the programme and were assigned an advisor whose role is to guide and support us through the process.

Setting up the Challenge

In February (in association with the British Heart Foundation) we launched a company-wide pedometer challenge. We asked employees to form teams of 5, and provided everyone with a pedometer, to count steps on a monthly basis. Everyone who entered also gets the chance of winning holiday vouchers at the end of the challenge. This challenge has been a great success, breaking down silos, whilst encouraging healthy competition between teams!Pedometer Challenge

Weekly motivational emails are sent to encourage motivation. They include suggestions for exercise, fitness events, health and fitness resources, reminder of the health benefits, healthy eating ideas and more, as well as publishing a monthly league table to see who is in the lead. The competition will run until the end of July, when the winning team will be crowned and announced here!

What we have Planned for the Future

Some other initiatives we have introduced as part of our Healthy Working Lives campaign are mental health training sessions, mindfulness training, a health and wellbeing resource library and we have also engaged with the Credit Union to help employees get their finances in better shape and save for the future.

We already have some great ideas for further challenges and initiatives that we hope to roll out later this year to keep the momentum going, including a stop smoking campaign and more support and awareness of mental health. We are well on our way to achieving our bronze status and hope to achieve this significant milestone over the next few weeks, which is very exciting! And we won’t stop there – we will then move on to work towards our silver award and beyond with the aim to achieving and maintaining gold status! This will be achieved through practical steps, proactive promotion and training and most importantly, we can only achieve this through the continued engagement and support of our colleagues. We will keep you updated with our Pedometer Challenge progress!

Running the London Marathon: Darryl’s training update

after long marathon training run

Eden Springs’ Darryl Johnson is running the Virgin London Marathon for the Charity Children with Cancer and to highlight Eden’s free water for charity fundraisers initiative.

Running through the wall

Nobody said training for a marathon was easy – far from it. Darryl has been running hard and putting in some good miles for his training, including a particularly tough 14.5 run that took it out of him (although he doesn’t look too bad afterwards in the first picture below!).

He’s also been working on speed, taking part in timed 5k ‘Parkruns’ that are organised around the country.

If you’re pushing yourself hard for a charity cause, consider applying for a free case of bottled water from Eden to help you meet your goals! Apply for a charity water donation

Running the Virgin London Marathon: Introduction

Posted in About Eden, Charity, Community on by .

good nutrition

Hi, My name is Darryl Johnson and I work in route operations at Eden Springs’ Leicestershire (Coalville) branch. On 13 April 2014 I will be undertaking the challenge of my life: I am running the London Marathon.

I have had tremendous support and sponsorship from Eden Springs and staff from all over the Eden network for which I am eternally grateful; without you all this would not have been possible. I’m going to do my best to keep you updated with how my training and runs are progressing on the Eden Springs blog – keep you eyes peeled!

Brave children

I am running for the charity Children with Cancer. Children with Cancer UK is the leading national children’s charity dedicated to the fight against all childhood cancers.

Around 3,600 children and young people are diagnosed with cancer every year in the UK. Our aims are to determine the causes, find cures and provide care for children with cancer.

The reason I have chosen this charity is because I believe we have it within our power to help these very brave children who are struck by this evil disease in the prime of their innocence.

Every mile I run and all the pain I’m going through (and believe me there’s a lot of that) is nothing compared to what these very brave souls are going through. I want to help them.

Big softie raises big money

My training has been very tough at times and very demanding but I have stuck to it and most of the time enjoyed it. 6 months ago I ran a half marathon (13.1 miles) with next-to-no training; just a good base level of fitness. I got very emotional afterwards…that’s just me – big softie!

I am now up to 20 miles training runs! Never ever thought those words would come from my mouth.
As the marathon draws closer I am getting more and more confident that I will NOT let these children and all those that have supported me down.

At last count my fund pot sits at over £1,500 – how amazing is that?! Thank you, thank you, thank you all.

Eden Springs: A Dedication to Coffee

Posted in About Eden, Coffee on by .

Eden Springs, as Europe’s leading office hydration provider, have been working hard to understand the coffee machine industry and the coffee needs of our wide range of customers.

Meeting the demand for cappuccinos, lattes and espressos and supplying the brands you respect and trust – like Kraft, Kenco and Lavazza – has meant that Eden have taken an in-depth look into the coffee culture in the UK and Europe.

“We are confident that customers will love this new offering” said Antonio de Alarcon, vice president of business development. “Eden has worked hard to become a leading brand in the drinking water solutions market, but we are now faced with a big opportunity to position ourselves as the leading provider for full-scale hydration solutions.”

Complete coffee solution

Raanan Zilberman, CEO of Eden Springs, commented: “We realised that we have created an amazing delivery platform for drinking solutions within the work place environment.”

“The provision of a complete coffee solution – across 16 countries – illustrates the confidence we have to look after customers in this area. [It] will also include the provision of other hot drinks such as teas, chocolate and herbal infusions.”
